On our recent visit, we stayed at the WaKeeney KOA Journey, a well-maintained park that caters to travelers passing through. We had actually stayed at this KOA several years ago on our way to Glacier National Park. It had undergone significant upgrades since our last visit. The cleanliness was remarkable, and the park offered a variety of activities to keep visitors entertained. From a refreshing pool and cornhole to basketball and a swingset, there was something for everyone. We also appreciated the thoughtfully designed picnic areas and a comfortable bench that provided a stunning view of the vast plains. It was evident that the WaKeeney KOA Journey is an ideal stop for RV travelers. Additionally, the park surprised us with its delightful offerings, including ice cream hours and weekend treats like sausage and gravy or sausage biscuits. Pet owners will be pleased to know that there's even a dedicated dog park on-site. For those in need of propane, the KOA has you covered as well.

Exploring Downtown WaKeeney

After our arrival in Wakeeney, we decided to take a leisurely ride around the downtown area before dinner. The town's small-town charm and historic buildings instantly captured our attention. One standout establishment that we couldn't resist visiting was the Western Kansas Saloon and Grill. Not only is it a local favorite, but it also holds the prestigious title of the top spot in WaKeeney according to TripAdvisor. Intrigued by its history, we discovered that this establishment was originally a hardware store in the early 1900s. However, it soon transformed into an underground gambling den, complete with a clever signal system involving coins being dropped down a pipe to alert the occupants of police presence.

Stepping into the Western Kansas Saloon and Grill, we were greeted by a warm and inviting atmosphere. The restaurant boasted an impressiv

e selection of scotches and whiskeys, appealing to the discerning palate. Our dining experience was equally satisfying.

Kevin opted for the KC Strip Steak, served with a perfectly baked potato and a side salad. The steak impressed with its preparation and flavor, requiring no additional sauces to enhance its taste. I decided on a burger with jalapeño peppers, jack cheese, and a spicy sauce, opting for a side salad instead of fries. Though ordered medium-well, the burger maintained its juiciness and flavor, delivering a delightful kick as promised by our attentive waitress. Overall, we highly recommend a visit to the Western Kansas Saloon and Grill for a satisfying meal and a taste of the town's rich history.
