Swinomish Casino & Lodge
Our adventure started at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge, a fantastic value with stunning views of Padilla Bay and what we’re pretty sure is Mount Baker. The sunsets were breathtaking! We learned a key tip: book early as it sells out quickly, but if you miss out, ask for the overflow area—no full hookups, but at $15 a night, it's a steal. Plus, grab your casino card before checking in for a 10% discount.
The slots were kind to us, letting us enjoy gaming each night and still walk away winners. The casino offers a variety of dining options, from fine dining to sports bars. Marie and Shelly loved the monthly burger special at the sports bar, which featured a portabella mushroom on grilled chicken. Tasty eats indeed! We also frequented the coffee bar for afternoon lattes.
Blackbird Wine Bar and Charcuterie
Next, we ventured to Anacortes and found the charming Blackbird Wine Bar and Charcuterie. Located on Main Street in the historic district, Brian, our attentive waiter, recommended a Beecher's Cheese plate with a spicy plum jam from “3 Generations”—it was to die for.
Sugar Mama Cafe
On our way back, we discovered Sugar Mama Cafe, tucked away on a side street. With a name like Sugar Mama, how could we resist? First course: Dueling Deviled Eggs, half Boursin, half Bloody Mary. Second course: Salted Caramel Butter Crumble—a sweet and salty crumb cake with house-made caramel and a scoop of Lopez Island Sweet Ice Cream. Shelly loved the Peach Cobbler, while Marie and I devoured the Salted Caramel Butter Crumble. We capped it off with fat-free caramel lattes to go.
Deception Pass State Park
We visited Deception Pass State Park, listed as a top state park by "The Discoverer." With two million visitors a year, it rivals nearby national parks. The views of the San Juan Islands and Deception Bridge, a National Scenic Monument, were spectacular. Every direction offered natural beauty.
Train Wreck Bar & Grill
We met up with family friends, Minaz and Margarita, at the Train Wreck Bar & Grill in Burlington, WA. Minaz and my father worked together years ago, and it was great hearing their stories. Minaz shares my love for whiskey, so we ended our visit with a tour of Beauty (our RV) and a sip of The Balvenie 16 Year Old Triple Cask Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
North Cascades National Park
In North Cascades National Park, the heat rivaled Texas, so we opted for the short River Loop Trail (1.8 miles). It offered stunning views of blue-green waters and mountains. After the hike, we explored the park from the comfort of our jeep, "The Beast," with AC blasting. The Diablo Lake Overlook was a highlight, and my sister jumped out to hike part of the Gorge Overlook Trail, sharing great photos.
Double Barrel BBQ
Debating dinner options after our North Cascades day, we spotted Double Barrel BBQ. We quickly agreed and turned around to give it a try. This Texan-owned spot felt like home with peanut shells on the floor and Shiner Bock on tap. We sampled ribs, chicken, brisket, pulled pork, and hot links. The presence of Dr. Pepper on the fountain confirmed the Texan roots.
Conclusion
This trip combined beautiful scenery, great food, and memorable company. From the stunning views at Swinomish Casino & Lodge to the culinary delights at various eateries, and the breathtaking parks we explored, every moment was a joy. Until next time, keep spinning the wheel of adventure!
Happy RVing!
