A Brief Stop in Custer, Montana: Tales from the Road

Our recent trip to Teddy Roosevelt National Park led us through Custer, Montana, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of place. Here's our tale of a brief stop in Custer and our adventures in nearby Hardin, Montana.

Custer, Montana: The Blink-and-Miss Town

Custer, Montana, is the kind of town you'll almost miss if you blink. Nestled on our route to Teddy Roosevelt National Park, it's a tiny spot on the map with not much to offer in terms of amenities. In fact, the nearest supermarket was a staggering 30 miles away in Hardin, Montana. But for a quick pit stop on our journey, Custer served its purpose.

Fort at 49: A No-Frills Campground

Our stopover in Custer led us to the Fort at 49, a no-frills campground conveniently located just off the interstate. What made it particularly convenient was the option for self-check-in and full hook-ups for our RV. Unfortunately, we couldn't experience the on-site restaurant, which had rave online reviews, as it was closed during our visit. We can only imagine what we missed out on.

A Culinary Misadventure in Hardin, Montana

With the restaurant at the Fort at 49 closed, we decided to venture into Hardin, Montana, for a bite to eat and some groceries. Our culinary choice for the day was Taco John's, which bears a striking resemblance to Taco Bell. However, our experience fell far from great. Slow service and lukewarm food left us with a forgettable impression. If you're passing through Hardin, you might want to explore other dining options.

A Stop at Jack Rabbit Reds Casino

As previously mentioned, there is a prevalence of casinos at every corner - if you want to call them that. I might call them more of a "game room". We decided to check out Jack Rabbit Reds Casino, curiosity getting the better of us. The small casino featured around 20 machines, a bar, and notably, no players club.

Shelly and I briefly tried our luck on some of the slots. While it provided some entertainment, Jack Rabbit Reds Casino isn't a place we're likely to revisit.

In the end, our brief stop in Custer, Montana, and the subsequent detour to Hardin were interesting but not likely an experience we will look to do again! LOL

Until next time, keep spinning the wheel of adventure!

Happy RVing!
